Click, there it is! 1.0.1
copyright (c) 1993, by Richard C. Cardona Utilities Group, Austin, Tx, USA.
Shareware: US$5.00
What does it do?
Click, there it is! is something Apple should have done in the open/save
dialog since the invention of the Multifinder. Have you ever wanted to
open/save a document into a place where the Finder already has a window
opened for it? A certain popular utilities package got it half right with
one of their components except they don't let you click on the Finder
window's title bar. Click, there it is! has no such restrictions. If you
see the window in the Finder you can instantly make that your current
folder simply by clicking on it. If want to select the desktop, simply
click on the desktop. If the open/save dialog should happen to obscure the
Finder window you are looking for, then simply drag it out of the way by
dragging it from any point along the frame!
Version History
1.0.1 - No longer depends on Mac II ROMs and later for showing the
startup icon. This prevented CPUs that originally shipped with
68000 processors from loading the extension. Boy did I hear this
from you!
- No longer causes problems if the Finder isn't running. If you quit
the Finder or run At Ease without the Finder that's ok now. Except
there isn't much benefit doing this.
- Sometimes double-clicking on an already selected window might
cause strange things.
- Fixed a bug where my filters were being called in open/save
auxiliary windows. Thanks Apple.
- Smaller disk footprint due to Resorcerer's elimination of extra
cicn data. Thanks Doug.

Subject: [*] comm - FTPd 2.2.0
FTPd v2.2.0 and FTPd Setup v2.2.0 is a Macintosh FTP server for Macs
with MacTCP. FTPd allows other machines on the Internet to FTP or
Gopher to your Mac. It requires System 7, File Sharing enabled, and
MacTCP 1.1 (or later). It honours the Users&Groups privileges and
passwords, and supports multiple logins, anonymous FTP (user name
anonymous or ftp), as well as MacBinary and BinHex transfers. It
runs either as a background only application, or as a normal application,
displaying the log file.
Changes since v2.1.0 include:
* Option to display file sizes in gopher directory listings
* Support for the TextToSpeach manager
* Support the append (APPE) command
* Support the size (SIZE) command
* Better support for firewalls
* CautionAlert for Server and Far Server privs
* Handle the virtual "." directory
* Support for alex cache servers
* Display JPEG and GIFf files properly in gopher listings
* Support LIST *.hqx so that mget *.hqx works as expected.
FTPd is $10 shareware.
Hope you like them,

Subject: [*] mac-voice-10-demo.hqx
MacVoice 1.0 DEMO is a fully functional copy of MacVoice 1.0 with the
following limitations:
Incoming messages are limited to 5 seconds
Messages are not time stamped when retrieved remotely
This version fixes a few bugs and adds support for ROM 6.10. However,
if possible use ROM 6.00 or 6.01, as ROM 6.10 have not proved reliable
with our software. Please be sure to read the README file. An order
form is also included.
MacVoice 1.0 is a voice mail/answering machine software for Macintosh
and ZyXEL modems. A ZyXEL modem, such as any one of the U-1496 Series,
is required. A Macintosh with a 16Mhz or faster processor is required.
BETTER quality compression (ADPCM3) is only recommended on faster Macs
such as the IIci, IIfx, and higher.
MacVoice 1.0 supports multiple mail boxes, Distinctive Rings, playback
and recording thru the Macintosh hardware.
If you have 32 bit addressing problems, please let us know. We have
made this version 32 bit clean for most Macs, however, if you discover
that MacVoice 1.0 is not 32 bit clean on your Macintosh, we would appreciate
a message from you.
Thanks,

It detects whether your Newton is plugged in or

This way, if you, like me always plug it in at

Greetings,
Enclosed you will find a pair of control definitions ('CDEF's)
I wrote for a small application I'm writing. I'm making them and
their source code available in the hopes that other programmers
might find them useful.
Slide Control GH:
A basic slider type control with a thumb and page up and page
down regions. For use in setting some continually varying
value.
Flag Control GH:
A toggle switch functionally identical to the triangle found
in Finder list views. For use in indicating expand/contraction

These are to be considered free for use by anyone and feel

that's why I included the source code.

Subject: 'ptch' 32 problems!
Okay, this is a tough one. I've been having trouble with my Mac IIsi
crashing with error #25 (stack ran into heap). I've tried removing
inits, but that hasn't helped. Every time, MacBugs shows the procedure
name as being "Jackson".
Finally, one night, I decided to search my hard drive for the little
piece of code that showed up in MacBugs to find out what application is
causing it.
The result of my search showed that the code was located in the resource
'ptch' 32 in my System file. I did some searching and found that the
patch was in System 7.0, 7.1, and 7 Pro. For awhile, I removed the
resource and everything appeared to work, but that made me nervous.
Does anyone happen to know where that resource comes from and what it
does? Is it actually a patch to the system which could be removed? Why
does it cause problems on my machine and not on others? Does anyone
else have problem crashing with an error #25 at any given time? Thanks.

It might be simply nostalgia, Malcom, but it is also an uncommonly
powerful commercial. Quite well done. It is also an effective demo
for what QuickTime can do. I saw it on a machine in the campus book
store, went "Oh wow!" and (with the manager's consent) made a copy
via Retrospect backup onto 11 HD floppies. The store was crowded with
mommies and daddies up for freshman orientation, and I fear that my
minor reputation as an (at best) eccentric spread a little farther
that day.
The movie is a hefty 15 meg, and it can be a real challenge to ftp.
Just ask some of the folk here and abroad I shared it with.

Subject: 2ND RFD: COMP.SYSMAC.GRAPHICS
Proposal:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
*To create a new "MACINTOSH GRAPHICS" specific newsgroup!
What is going to be gained from this news group that cannot be handled
by existing groups?
*Answer: There exists a tremendous number of dissimilar platforms available
for the creation of COMPUTER GRAPHICS. A "Macintosh" graphic question would
most certainly be alien to a "PC" user, as would both be foreign to an "SGI
Workstation" operator. Therefore, to lump all Computer Graphics questions
into the existing "comp.graphics" is much too broad and inefficient for one
single newsgroup.
*PLEASE read this entire message carefully to participate in the creation
process. There are explicit rules in creating a new group that must be followed
for success. This is a formal request for discussion (RFD) for the creation
of a new newsgroup dedicated to MACINTOSH GRAPHICS... including but not
exclusive to the following.
1. 3D: Electric Image, Vidi Pro, Macromodel,Sketch, Infini-D, Strata.
2. Draw/Page Layout: Illustrator, Freehand, Quark Express, PageMaker...
3. Paint/Image Process: Photoshop, Painter X2, Kai's Power Tools ...
4. Cad: MiniCad Plus, Upfront, Form Z, DesignWorkshop...
5. QuickTime Movies: After Effects, Premiere, Morph, VideoFusion, Flo...
6. Authoring: Director, Action, Persuassion...
7. Graphic Utilites: Debablizer, Jag, Fetch, Fast Eddie...
Proposed Newsgroup Name:
--------------------------------------
*comp.sys.mac.graphics
Status:
-------------------------------------
*unmoderated
Description
------------------------------------
* In order to participate correctly, you must do the following:
1. SUBSCRIBE to : "news.groups". When you "Follow-Up"to this post,
(RFD:*comp.sys.mac.graphics), your contribution to the discussion will appear
in the group.Discussion will take place ONLY in that group ( news.groups ).
2. DISCUSSION (RFD:): What should your post to the discussion look like?
An example of a discussion post would be as follows: "Yes I'd like to
establish a Macintosh Newsgroup also, unmoderated, and with the name
Comp.Sys.Mac.Graphics." All comments for moderation status, name, ect.,
should be posted here. Look for the "RFD" in the title...( Request For
Discussion ).
3. VOTING (CFV): After the discussion period expires, and it is determined
that
there really is a desire for the new group... (about 1 month) a "CFV"
(Call For Votes ) will take place. This is where you will cast your vote.
A third party moderator will tally the votes, and post the results after the
official time period. It is IMPORTANT you cast your Vote if you wish the new
group to be created..., every Vote counts . Only Votes mailed to the Vote
taker will count, not Votes posted to the Net.
4. RESULTS: There must be over 100 valid YES Votes more than NO
Votes, and at least 2/3 of the total number of valid votes received are in
favor of creation. Then a new group control message will be sent out.
Please participate in the manner ( summarized ) above and if there is enough
interested people participating in the Discussion / Voting... process, it
will ensure the newsgroup will be created to UseNet's requirements.
Thank you for your participation.

Hmmm... I'm weighing out the options of buying an external monitor for

What's the word? Anyone use VGA monitors with their PB or Mac? Do I

i've just bought think c 6.0 (and updated to 6.0.1) and autodoubler, and
installed both (including copydoubler). i left my mac on overnight
to compress the hard drive , then started playing around with think C
i just compiled a couple of the demo files that came with think c
(i couldn't run them first because 'out of memory' - i have an
LC II with 4 megs, think C's allocation is 2048K - any help with this ?
- i tried upping think C's allocation to 2300K (all i can give it)
but no help - i was only trying to run a program to create a window and
print 'hello world' (yes i am completely new to C programming - i have to
start somewhere - sad i know)
anyway, i digress
the main problem is that my menu bar keeps disappearing, either in the finder
or in tetris max 2.0 (and probably other applications - i haven't checked)
i don't know if i have knackered something with think C (i have gatekeeper
1.2.8
installed so i don't think anything in the finder or system can have changed
without a warning) or if this is a problem with autodoubler (version 2.0i)
ANY SUGGESTION ON ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS ????

Subject: File Sync Software (Q)
Folks, I again need the benefit of your wisdom and/or experience. We are
moving in stages to convert Leslye (Goodwife Bloom, Dr Bloom the Younger
and Prettier) from venerable goosed Mac II to new Centris 650. The two
HD's had identical contents in August (I loaded the C650 from the II's
Retrospect backup tape when it arrived), but a couple months have led to
the Macintosh equivalent of continental drift. Mostly because I refused
to buy her a 16M SIMM for twice the price I could have paid in July. If
I'd ordered the memory when I ordered the C650, we wouldn't have been in
that boat. My decision to wait until the new box came in before ordering
the memory would have been smart had it not been for that plant fire.
Leslye loves the C650, but some of her apps simply didn't work in its
piddling factory 8M. So she has played on both machines. A couple weeks
ago I decided that $600 was "close enough" to a reasonable price for a
16M SIMM, and we decided to get serious about converting. Give the SIMM
a week to see if anything goes boom. Fine. Put the II's SCSI chain onto
the C650 and give it a week or so to see if anything dies. Uh, Al, where
the naughtyword is my scanner? I'd been meaning to check that. Honestly.
Seems Apple gave its built-in CD-ROM drive SCSI ID 3, same as LaCie had
given her trusty SilverScanner. Couldn't find the SS manual anywhere (L
is so terribly neat), and nothing like a SCSI ID selector was obvious
on the SS, so I swallowed what pride I have left and called LaCie and
begged enlightenment. The tech said it wasn't in the manual anyway, so
I shouldn't feel too dumb, and within five minutes we had it knocked.
OK, time to get the C650's hard disk's contents straightened out. I just
spent too much of this weekend trying out the four disk-sync programs in
the archives: Shuttle Pilot demo, Switchback, Up-to-Date, & Update demo.
I'm not real happy with any of them. I couldn't figure out what exactly
Switchback was doing. Up-to-Date was just a tad too automatic for my
taste. Update's silly limit of no more than 100K in the folders to be
sync'd just got me mad. Shuttle pilot was the best of the lot, but it
gives you the option of only accepting or rejecting its recommendations.
If you don't like all its recommendations, you must invoke each transfer
manually, one at a time. And if you have ResEdit 2.1.1 on one disk and
ResEdit 2.1 on the other, it offers to copy each program to the other
disk -- instead of delete 2.1 and copy 2.1.1. Suboptimal, yes?
I know what I'm looking for. Back in the dark ages I wrote a file sync
program for the Apple ///. Very much like Shuttle Pilot, the program
listed source/dest files in left and right windows, with a suggested
course of action (copy left, copy right, leave alone -- the last being
absent from any of the four programs). However, I did not offer only
the option of taking all the suggestions or making the desired copies
one at a time. I gave the user the ability to page through the list and
modify each suggestion -- copy left, copy right, leave alone, delete
left, delete right, delete both. Then select "go for it" and let the
program do everything it was told in one fell swonk. It was a rather
nice little general purpose file maintenance program. A tad ahead of its
time -- based on sales.
I can't believe that no Mac program can match the features of a 7-yr-old
beastly 6502 Pascal program for a 256K Apple ///. Right now it makes more
sense to open up side-by-side file-view windows for the two HD's and sync
them manually than it does to use any of the file-sync programs in the
sumex-aim archive.
That, however, is a human-intensive activity pretty much guaranteed to
yield a messup. Humans make a lot of mistakes.
Have any of y'all seen a superior alternative?

Subject: How To Make Spoken Text Tracks In QuickTime 1.5+ (C)
Earlier, flypba@aol.com mentioned, with very clear instructions,
how to make captioned text using the MoviePlayer utility. I commented
that I could not get his instructions to work.
Well, I was wrong. Not only does the method WORK, but there is
MORE!!!! flypba@aol.com has really alerted the net_world to something
amazing here.
First off, my problem in not getting his method to work was that
for some reason, Adobe Type Reunion caused a conflict, *somehow*.
Removing ATR allowed flypba@aol.com's captioned text instructions to work
perfectly.
But, I said there is more.
Imagine the following. You need to create visual instructions.
By merely pasting in text with the conventional cmd-v command,
you will get a full QT page of text, similar to the title page of the silent
movies of 65 years ago. Marvelous!
So, one has two methods of entering text into a quicktime movie,
the title page method and the captioned text method.
But, there's something really wonderful in this gem of a program,
something that I didn't catch in flypba@aol.com's comments. You can MIX
in audio, YES (!!!), audio, to pre-existing frames, including frames that
already have audio, WITHOUT (yes, I'm shouting--this is GREAT!) losing the
pre-existing audio.
With the MoviePlayer, select a System 7 sound, even one that you
recorded. MoviePlayer will offer to convert the sound to a movie. Do
that. Next, select and copy the selection from this 'new' movie.
Now, click on the movie that you wish to mix the sound in. Select
an area of the movie where the sound would be appropriate. Using
flypba@aol.com's instructions, cntrl-shft-option-paste the sound in. You
now have sound mixed into your QuickTime movie, at that location.
This really tickles me in a major way. For those who want to do
some editing of QuickTime clips without having the funds to purchase
megamoney multi-media editors will certainly appreciate this.
What a hidden easter egg!

His (or is it her) instructions are marvelous, but durned if I can
get this to work with my QuickTime 1.6.1, System 7.1 on a Mac LCIII using
Movier Player version 1.0.
The problem I am experiencing is that Movie Player claims that the
clipboard has items that it cannot understand or recognize. I am indeed
doing the ctrl-shift-option paste method.
Has anyone else had success in using flypba@aol.com's methods? I
really could use these. The only variation I can think of is that my
MoviePlayer, at version 1.0, is not up to date.

I'm almost positive that your problem is the TCP Header Compression
setting in InterSLIP. It must match your account, and if your account
was set up incorrectly with that setting off, then having it on in
InterSLIP will cause this sort of weird problem. Try toggling that

Will the LW Select 360 support FinePrint and PhotoGrade at 600 dpi or
will it be like its predecessors and only operate at 300 dpi? Can it be
upgraded to support ethernet and at what cost? The "ApplePrice" is
$1599, but what is the HEPP I price? When will it be available in
quantity?
Finally, does anyone know anything about the soon-to-be-released
Hewlett-Packard 600 dpi personal printer, the HP 4MP? HP seems to be
readying its introduction with the recent $100 rebate on their existing
laser printeres. I suppose that their new offering will be comparable
to Apple's LW Select 360. Does anyone have any advanced facts for
comparison or any knowledge of when it will actually be released? I
like Apple's 10 ppm engine, but if I can have the same quality at 4 ppm
and $200-300 less, I would go with the less expensive printer.

Sounds to me like its processor is resting to conserve power. I forget
the exact trick, but there's some way of getting into the battery
DA to turn that off (although then your battery life will suffer).
Most of the good PowerBook programs like CPU and PBTools provide you
more control over that setting.

Unfortunately, there is no way of seeing PostScript code displayed on your

that working with frames is more trouble than it's worth.
Here are some watermarks that I have fussed with size-wise and now use all the
time for you to insert in your header (make sure that you set the style for
this text as "PostScript"):

INTERNAL USE ONLY:
.page. /Helvetica-Bold findfont 72 scalefont setfont 150 225 moveto 0

Printing these items with "color/grayscale" selected will make for a nicer
watermark if your printer supports it.

At the University of NC @ Chapel Hill, I believe the following is true:
Faculty _can_ purchase computers from the computer department in Student
Stores at the same reduced prices as offered to students. However, the
purchase must be cash/credit card and the computer must be for personal
use, not for use in one's campus office or lab (I guess that means home
use?). In the past, faculty were able to buy computers from the campus
store using funds from research grants or the like; recently, some alert
individual discovered that the practice violated state law (the Umstead
Act) and so it was nixed. To purchase a computer with grant funds for
office/lab, one must go throught the University Purchasing department,
which is slower and does not provide an opportunity to play with the item
before ordering it. Nonetheless, Purchasing does obtain discounts that are
generally as good as Student Stores. [If I am wrong about any of this or
if someone from NC can explain why the past practice violated State law I'd
love to hear from them.]
Another interesting thing is that the Macs (and I assume DOS) machines
offered by student stores at nice discounts only come in certain
configurations/packages (eg, installed hard drive sizes), which are set by
the manufacturer; through the Purchasing Dept., however, you may order
anything you wish.

Probably some computer dealers have requested a legal opinion from the
Attorney General because of the University competing with them in "the
exercise of free enterprise". That happened here at the UofI (Champaign
Urbana, Illinois) about 8 years ago. 4 computer dealers sued the
University of Illinois. A Computerland dealer supplied funds to the other
4, but did not participate in the suit. All 4 are now out of business, but
the ComputerLand dealer is still going strong. They lost the suit.

local "leaf-node" news server ? (but how ?)
At present I use Nuntius on my Mac to access a remote internet news
server, but the remote server is too slow for satisfactory on-line reading,
and in any case I would like to save all the articles. Any ideas ?

Subject: Using an HP Laserjet printer
I have access to an HP Laserjet II that has a Postscript cartridge. Is it
possible to connect my Mac to this printer and expect it to produce nice
output? Can I install one of the Apple printers from the LW 8.0 diskette
and hope for it to work? If so, which laserprinter would be the best to
install - probably the most basic one I guess, but I don't know Apple's
laser product line - what's the most "plain jane" laser printer?
Or is this silly and I should just continue printing on my Stylewriter and
xerox the results?
Any suggestions welcome.

Subject: WordPerfect 3.0 Outlining (A)
I sent a direct response a bit ago thinking that surely someone else had
chimed in on the question of WPMac 3.0 and outlining. Having caught up on
the intervening digests and discovering no one had responded, here is the
answer for others:
WordPerfect Mac 3.0 doesn't really do outlining. It does what the DOS products
called outlining throughout history--structured paragraph numbering. And
nothing else.
I like WPMac a lot. But outlining is definitely not among its virtues.
